“Energy resilience is crucial. In the context of strengthening national vigilance, it is a key prerequisite,” Commissioner General of Police (Ret.) Eddy Hartono, S.I.K., M.H., Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), said. He made the statement while delivering a lecture to participants of the National Values Strengthening Program (P4N) Batch 70 at Lemhannas RI on Monday (August 3).
During the session, the BNPT Head presented material titled “Strengthening National Vigilance in Addressing Terrorist Threats to Strategic Energy Infrastructure for Strengthening Energy Resilience in Support of National Resilience.”
He explained that strategic energy infrastructure serves as the backbone of the nation’s daily life. Energy is a key driver of a wide range of activities, including government operations, defense, the economy, industry, transportation, telecommunications, and public services. As such, energy can be considered a vital national asset. Disruptions to energy infrastructure could therefore affect national stability, making its protection and security essential.
Terrorist threats to the energy sector could cause widespread losses, disrupt national stability, and undermine energy resilience. Such threats may take the form of physical attacks, cyberattacks, hybrid threats, and insider threats. The main potential impacts include disruptions to energy supplies, economic losses, threats to national stability, and declining public confidence.
Collaboration is a key strength in protecting and securing energy infrastructure. According to him, national vigilance must be strengthened through collaboration among all elements of government, security forces, businesses, and the public. A Whole-of-Government and Society Approach is needed to safeguard energy resilience and national stability. “Synergy and collaboration are the key to energy resilience,” the BNPT Head said.
To address threats to the energy sector, BNPT has developed a strategy to strengthen national vigilance through enhanced intelligence capabilities, stronger security for vital infrastructure, human resource development, technological advancement, and interagency cooperation. The strategy is expected to enable faster and more accurate threat detection, ensure the reliability of energy infrastructure, and strengthen national resilience in support of Indonesia’s energy security in the future. “Protecting energy infrastructure means safeguarding the nation’s lifeblood, strengthening the economy, and securing Indonesia’s future,” the BNPT Head said.
