“Indonesia’s involvement in the Board of Peace and the International Stabilization Force should be understood as an effort to support stability and protect civilians,” said the Governor of Lemhannas RI, Dr. H. TB. Ace Hasan Syadzily, M.Si. He made the statement during the Urgent and Rapid Recommendation Drafting Meeting organized by the Directorate of Strategic Studies on Ideology and Politics under the Deputy for Strategic Studies of Lemhannas RI on Thursday (2/26). The meeting discussed “Optimizing Indonesia’s Role in the Board of Peace and the International Stabilization Force in the Gaza Strip from the Perspective of National Interests, International Law, and Solidarity with Palestine.”

The Governor further emphasized that Indonesia’s membership in the Board of Peace represents a concrete step to take skilled and practical measures in supporting peace in the Gaza Strip. According to him, this step is a realistic approach that Indonesia can take to promote peace in Palestine. Therefore, the presence of speakers was considered crucial to provide input on measures that could be optimized within the context of national interest, international law, and solidarity with Palestine.

Present as speakers were Indonesia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno; Executive Director of the Center for Indonesia Risk Studies Dr. Kusnanto Anggoro; Professor of Arabic Studies at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Yon Machmudi; Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law at Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, S.H., M.LL.M., Ph.D.; and Head of the Department of International Relations at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Indonesia, Broto Wardoyo, Ph.D. “We hope that through this discussion, we can gain a clearer understanding in formulating strategic steps to maximize Indonesia’s role,” said the Governor of Lemhannas RI.

During the session, Deputy Foreign Minister Arif Havas Oegroseno noted that the UN Security Council explicitly calls on and authorizes member states to contribute meaningfully to the Board of Peace and the International Stabilization Force. In line with this, Indonesia, as a UN member, can participate in providing assistance. Highlighting this issue, Prof. Hikmahanto Juwana, a Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia, reminded that Indonesia’s mandate in the Board of Peace and ISF currently lacks a clear legal protection mechanism. “National regulations also do not yet provide provisions regarding the participation of Indonesian forces in the Board of Peace,” he stated.
